There are some places that stay with you – not because of what you did, but because of how they made you feel.
For me, that place was Botswana.
It was part of our African honeymoon – three countries, each completely different – but this was the one that felt like magic, and I know I will return here someday. From the moment we arrived at Muchenje Lodge, perched above the Chobe floodplains, something inside me just… settled. The pace slowed. The noise stopped. And a sense of calm came over me that I hadn’t felt in years – the kind that stays long after you’re home
🌅 Chobe River & The Magic of the Wild
If there’s one moment that sums up Botswana, it’s the Chobe River.
We spent the day cruising slowly along its wide, glassy surface, surrounded by life on every side.
Elephants taking mud baths, throwing dust over themselves like kids at play. Families wading into the water — tiny calves, one barely a day old — following their mothers across to the other side. Crocodiles lingered nearby, impalas darting everywhere, and hippos snorted somewhere downstream.
When we stopped for lunch on board, there were elephants on all four sides of us. Hundreds of them. It was the most surreal, “pinch-me” moment — and I remember thinking, how lucky are we to be here?
No photo can ever do it justice.

🐆 Moments That Took My Breath Away
Our first night in Botswana, we saw our first leopard — the one I’d been waiting for since South Africa.
It walked right past our jeep, close enough to see the velvet of its fur glowing in the sunset. Unreal. Special. Magical. Awestruck. That’s the moment I definitely didn’t cry — just quietly “adjusted my sunglasses” and pretended to look for another photo angle. 😅
And then there were the nights.
Lying in bed, the world silent except for the low, rumbling roar of a lion pride just outside the lodge. Surreal, spine-tingling, and somehow deeply peaceful. You don’t just hear Africa — you feel it.

🏡 Muchenje Lodge — Boutique Luxury with Heart
If the wilderness was Botswana’s soul, Muchenje was its heart.
It’s that rare kind of lodge that gets everything right — boutique, eco-conscious, and completely personal. Every detail feels effortless: all-inclusive, right down to the laundry (a blessing when you’ve been away for three weeks!), and a mini-bar magically restocked to your exact taste every day. Not having a bill at the end of your stay? Bliss.
And then there’s the food — delicious, fresh, and full of flavour — paired perfectly with pre-dinner cocktails and sundowners of your choice. Some nights, the staff choir performs before dinner, and honestly… your smile matches theirs.
It’s the people who make Muchenje unforgettable.
The staff and guides don’t just work there — they welcome you into their world. You share meals, stories, and laughter over sundowners, and within no time, you’re chatting like old friends. By the end of three nights, leaving genuinely felt like saying goodbye to family.
On our final night, they surprised us with a private champagne dinner on the deck — lanterns glowing, the river below alive with quiet sounds. No noise, no rush. Just the two of us, the African night, and that rare feeling of total peace.

📸 Take a Photo with Your Heart
It’s so tempting to take a photo of everything on safari — often the same elephant, sunset, or hippo for the tenth time. But sometimes, you need to put the camera down, take a breath, and just enjoy what’s in front of you with your own eyes.
Some moments aren’t meant to be captured. They’re meant to be felt.
(That’s not to say I don’t have about a million photos… but still 😅)

💬 What Botswana Taught Me
Botswana taught me to slow down. To listen more. To appreciate quiet as much as adventure. To put my phone down.
It reminded me that true luxury isn’t marble bathtubs or five-course dinners — it’s watching elephants at sunset, feeling utterly at peace, and being part of something bigger than yourself.
I left with a full heart, dusty shoes, and the kind of calm that stays long after you’re home.

Trish, you’ve made me cry! What beautiful words and we can relate so well. Sometimes when we were there I had to stop taking photos to just breathe it all in and soak up the moment. I desperately wanted to be able to relive how I felt in Botswana, when I got home.
June, thank you so much for taking the time to share this.
That feeling you’ve described – the need to put the camera down and just be there – is exactly what got under my skin too. Botswana has a quiet way of doing that. It doesn’t shout for attention, it just slowly settles into you.
I love that you wanted to relive how it felt when you got home. That tells me it wasn’t just a trip for you – it was something deeper, something that stayed. Those places are rare, and Botswana is one of them.
I’m so glad my words helped take you back there, even for a moment. Thank you for trusting me with that memory. 🤍
Warmly,
Trish
